Chicken And Chorizo Slimming World

I’m a huge fan of chorizo. One of my favourite soups is chickpea and chorizo (you can find my tomato and chickpea soup recipe HERE – just add some chorizo and syn it!), so I’ve been looking forward to trying out this paella meal for a while. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t tend to eat microwave meals, so it’s taken me some time to get round to it, but I finally got there this week!

This one is a complete meal in itself, although Slimming World do recommend that you add some speed food to make sure you’re sticking to the plan, so I steamed some veg to have on the side.

Chicken microwave meals do tend towards being a bit on the rubbery side, but, as with the other Slimming World ready meals, this one isn’t all that bad. The texture of the chicken isn’t as good as you would get if you cooked this from scratch yourself (incidentally, as with all the other Slimming World ready meals, the recipe is on the back of the pack, although it omits the chorizo and leaves it as a chicken paella), but it’s nowhere near as rubbery as some others I’ve tried in the past, and is quite pleasant.

I like spicy food, and I could have done with a little extra spice here, but I know there are plenty of people who like their spices a little milder, and they’re well catered for here. If I were to have this in the future, I’d probably spice it up a bit.

The chorizo-style sausage isn’t quite as good as actual chorizo, but if Slimming World decide to bring that out as a product, I would be happy to give it a try to make my favourite soup syn-free! All in all, it wasn’t a bad effort on the sausage side – I’ve tasted a hell of a lot worse, and it was actually quite nice, It didn’t have the same texture as real chorizo would have, but it was fairly decent.

The rice and veg in the meal were tender, and the sauce throughout the dish is very nice. All in all, this is a pretty good meal – nice flavours and textures, and it’s enough that you feel you’re having a proper, filling meal. I’ll happily try making the paella from scratch myself, although I think I’ll syn some chorizo to add to it – unless Slimming World decide to start selling their syn-free version…

Paella is one of the best-known dishes in Spanish cuisine. For this reason, many non-Spaniards view it as Spain’s national dish, but Spaniards almost unanimously consider it to be a dish from the Valencian region. Valencians, in turn, regard paella as one of their identifying symbols. Paella takes its name from the wide, shallow traditional pan used to cook the dish on an open fire. Paella means “frying pan” in Valencian, Valencia’s regional languageWikipedia

As I share recipes on my blog I find out lots of fascinating information about different aspects of the recipe – ingredients, origins, etc., and try to link to Wiki if I can so that you can read up more if you like.

Spanish Chicken Traybake

When I think of paella, I think of a huge frying pan (called a paella) filled with rice, chicken, seafood, and peas. But there are different variations, and this is likely to be as it travelled around different regions of Spain, and around the world to create similar rice dishes.

What sets paella apart is a spice called saffron, which is the most expensive spice in the world, and more expensive than gold by weight! This is because the stamens of the saffron crocus are picked by hand and dried.

That all said, I am personally not a fan of saffron, and to me it tastes a bit medicinal. So whenever I make this Slimming World Paella recipe I leave it out. I guess then it just become red rice with chicken and chorizo… but hey ho!

Slimming World Chicken & Chorizo Soup Maker Recipe (1 Syn Per Serving)

This savory rice dish is flavored with garlic, and onions, and tomatoes, (and more!) and tastes so good. The Syns (if you are following Slimming World) comes from the use of chorizo in this recipe. You could leave it out if you like, but it adds a certain something to the dish.

The paella is finished off with roasted red peppers, peas, fresh herbs and a squeeze of lemon juice that gives it a delicious zing! Ready in about an hour, this is a tasty meal for the whole family to enjoy.

You may have several of the ingredients in your kitchen already such as garlic, onions, tomato purée, etc., but for your convenience, I’ve linked any specialized ingredients needed for this recipe to Amazon below. The full ingredients list and measurements are in the recipe card.
