Best Supermarket Paella

Paella is a staple of Spanish cuisine. It’s a perfect one pan festive dish served at the centre of the table to nearest and dearest - preferably eaten for lunch rather than dinner and warm rather than hot. Its aromatic short grain Bomba rice is gently cooked in rich sofrito stock with added chicken or rabbit protein, typically elevated with a glug of white wine, garlic, tomatoes and saffron that give a pungent flavour.

Over the last couple of years this dish has caused some controversy even for the most experienced chefs like Jamie Oliver, who got into hot water by adding Spanish chorizo sausage. In the UK, we have a version of paella, one that will perhaps divide opinion but is nonetheless tasty. It includes additions such as charred pieces of chicken, tender prawns and smoky chorizo and a fair amount of paprika to replace costly saffron, all added for flavour and texture variation, with splashes of colourful red peppers and chopped parsley which add freshness to the dish. We tested 12 chicken and prawn paellas to find the best.

There's a generous quantity of chorizo, chicken pieces and whole prawns in this fragrantly spiced dish. The flavours are well-balanced, with gentle heat from paprika and chilli, and the meat is tender.

How To Make Paella On The Barbecue

This rice dish is vibrant and colourful thanks to the mix of prawns, chicken, peas and parsley and the chorizo gives it a lovely smoky aroma. There is a good amount of spice but some testers found the prawns and chicken too dry.

Vibrant and colourful with generous pieces of chicken, chorizo and prawn and a fresh herbed appearance. Smoky paprika, fresh parsley and a robust tomato aroma with a gentle chilli kick from the chorizo. Testers agreed it tasted quite bland, lacking a punchy flavour. The rice is dense but overall quite a good texture.

Lots of sauce with a good mix of rice, peppers, peas and parsley. It has a strong paprika and seafood aroma. We liked the balanced spicy back note from the chorizo and the gentle smokiness but found it was slightly bland in other parts. All protein was on the chewy side; however the rice has a lovely bite to it against the creamy sauce

Morrisons The Best King Prawn & Chicken Paella

This easy to cook frozen paella has vibrant yellow rice with lovely charred chicken pieces. Although not as saucy as the others, it has lots of fish, prawn and squid in the mix. Testers disliked the strong seafood aroma but enjoyed the flavoursome chicken and balanced seafood flavour. It lacked seasoning and a traditional smoky paprika flavour. The rice is soft and fluffy, but the chicken was dry.

Soft, fluffy rice with a very colourful appearance with flecks of thyme, oregano, parsley, bay leaves and peas. Freshness from the mixed pepper and smokiness from the chorizo, with a strong oregano aroma. The smoky flavour was nice, and some testers enjoyed the pepper kick, but most were disappointed with the lack of flavour and found the whole mix watery with chewy prawns.

Perfectly tender, yet firm to the bite rice cooked in a pleasantly creamy tomato sauce with a spicy finish. The dish is filled with hearty chunks of meat but unfortunately the chicken was a tad too dry, and the chorizo and prawns were rubbery.

Easy Vegetable Paella

A promising appearance with lots of peas, crunchy red peppers, onions and charred chicken pieces. Unfortunately, our panel was left disappointed by the bland and diluted flavour of this paella. There is a subtle tomato flavour and the rice is cooked well but the prawns were chewy and bland.

This frozen bag of paella was easy to cook on the hob. It has large chunks of red pepper and prawns with very fluffy rice. A fragrant tomato and paprika aroma but some testers detected raw onion and disliked the quality of the chicken.

This paella comes frozen and has pieces of pollock, tiny mussels, chicken, prawn, peas, red pepper and Romano green beans. The rice is yellow with lots of colourful vegetables and had a strong seafood aroma that we didn’t enjoy. Testers found it bland and quite plain, lacking traditional spices and flavours and the rice was overcooked.
