Gluten Free Paella Recipe

A few weeks ago my daughter’s school hosted an open house dinner. They had caterers there with huge (like as big as my child) sizepans of Paella and it looked and smelled so good, but I didn’t eat a bite.

Why? Because even though the ingredients should be naturally gluten free, there was no way for me to know for sure and I couldn’t risk it. When the opportunity came to make it at home myself, I couldn’t wait!

Paella is one of those dishes that seems complicated but is actually very easy to make. By using flavorful ingredients you get a delicious one pan meal that tastes like it took all day.

Easy Spanish Paella Recipe

Most people think of Arborio rice when making risotto, but it works so well in this dish, as it soaks up all the flavors and cooks up beautifully.

The trick to a great Paella is to use the ingredients to elevate the rice. Arborio rice is the perfect base to really play with flavors and create a meal that others will rave about!

Rice is the star of the dish.Because Rice Select’s Arborio rice is free from anything artificial and is non-GMO (plus it comes in a clear, BPA-free canister), it is the perfect base.

Easy Vegan Paella (1 Pan!)

RiceSelect’s Arborio rice is easily available at Walmart (as are all the ingredients in this dish!) and, while supplies last, there is a great Ibotta coupon for a $1.00 on 1 RiceSelect product.

If you scour the web, you will find all kinds of Paella variations, but this classic version is my favorite. Once you get the hang of the technique, you can always put your own spin on it!

I start with a big pan.I have a Paella pan that makes 4-6 servings, but if you don’t, then use a pan with a wide base and a couple of inches deep.

Be sure to prep all your ingredients beforehand so that you are ready to add them in. The process goes pretty quickly until it’s time to sit back and let the RiceSelect Arborio rice soak up all those great flavorsto create anunforgettable dish every time.

Once everything is chopped and ready, make your broth. This is a similar method to risotto. Take your chicken broth, a bit of water, add your saffron threads, and thenlet it simmer over medium heat until you need it.

Brown your chorizo (if you can’t find Spanish chorizo, you can use a kielbasa style sausage), chicken, and then your shrimp and take them out of the pan.

When the Arborio rice is added, give it a few minutes to toast up and meld with all the other ingredients. Then add your broth. I like to strain the saffron threads out.

Mix together the rice, broth, parsley, and peas and let it cook for about 5 minutes. Give it another good stir and then add in the chicken and chorizo. Let it cook for 15 minutes.

Nestle the shrimp on top and then cover it with foil and let the rice cook for another 10 minutes. Some recipes call for this and some don’t, but I have found it really helps to make sure that the rice on the side of the pan cooks evenly.

When you remove it from the heat, add a couple of squeezes of lemon over the top. Let it cool a minute and then serve directly from the pan. You will find that in some parts the rice is a bit toasty on the bottom. That is ok. That is the best part! This is not the kind of rice dish you fluff.

It has the ability to momentarily take you to that part of the world and experience a little of it right where you are. With the global pandemic, I’ve been trying lots of recipes from all over the world and today I’m taking inspiration from Spain and making this Easy Gluten Free Paella.

Paella is something that I’ve had from different people over the years, but never tried it myself. I love the flavors of sea food, sausage and spices that come together to form this delicious one pot dish that is best shared with family and friends.

For my Easy Gluten Free Paella, I’ve taking some of the traditional components, added my own little spin to create an easy recipe that is perfect for weeknight dinner or a quick dish when having a friend or two over.

Cheap And Easy Gluten Free Paella

If you’ve never had, or you aren’t sure what it is, it is a Spanish rice dish that consists of saffron, chicken, seafood and sometimes other meats, that has been cooked in a large shallow pan. It is probably one of the most famous Spanish dishes.

There are many Paella recipes out there, some that use only seafood, others use a combination of meats, and some that use both meat and seafood. According to Saveur  there really is no one original paella recipe, but the ingredients and style of cooking has remained consistent over the years.

My

The rice that is traditionally used in Paella is Bomba rice. It is a short grain rice, similar to that or risotto rice, known as arborio rice. If you can’t get Bomba rice, arborio rice is a great substitute.

Easy Veggie Paella

For our recipe we used a combination or shrimp, chicken and sausage. The sausage that is usually used is chorizo sausage. It is a pork based Spanish sausage. I don’t traditionally eat pork so I used a smoked chicken sausage to replace, but the flavors was still super delish!

This is one of the key ingredients in Paella. Not only does it add a nice color to the paella, but also great flavor and aroma. These days getting saffron is a little difficult, so I use it when I can get it, but I also add turmeric (sometimes called saffron in the Caribbean) which gives the paella its traditional yellow tint and also adds a great flavor to the dish.

I love the flavor of smoked paprika. It gives the paella a great smoky flavor that is so traditional to the dish!

Because I’m adding chicken to my paella, I used chicken stock which I always have on hand. But you can use seafood stock for a deeper seafood flavor to your paella.

I’m all for adding a veggie to my dishes, and since you can basically add almost anything you want to paella, I added in some sweet peas with give a nice color and extra texture to my paella

If you’re familiar with paella, it is made in a shallow pan, known as a paella pan. It has a wide surface and allows you to cook everything evenly and in one layer. I don’t have a paella pan, I definitely want one though, but if you’re like me and don’t have one, I use a large 12 inch cast iron skillet.

For me Paella reminds me of Pelau a traditional Caribbean rice dish that is cooked down with coconut milk and other great additions. It is comforting just like this Easy Gluten Free Paella and a great weeknight dinner or lunchtime dish!
